Rwanda Genocide in a nutshell

800,000 people were murdered in 100 days. the U.N. officials didn't know what had triggered the mass population of the Hutu's to plan to eliminate the Tutsis'. some feel that the misterious shooting down of the president's plane may have caused an outbreak. others feel that the genocide was going to happen eventually. either way, the tutsi culture was nearly terminatied if not for the acts of peacekeepers and the RPF, a rebellious, Tutsi dominate group on Rwanda. the world stood by and watched this horrible series of events unfold. even our own country, America the Brave, stood by and refused to label this a genocide. political leaders had been shunned of using the word in an effort to prevent a meltdown. chilren were left without parents. women were left with HIV. and rwanda was left with a torn identity and a glim future.

Genocide Facts

in 100 days an estimated 800,000 people were perished in Rwanda. three quarters of the Tutsi population was eliminated. According to survivors-fund.org, an average of 6 men, women, and children were killed every minute of the genocide. an approximated 300,000 to 400,000 people survived the genocide. between 250,000 and 500,000 women were raped by the Hutu rebellions. of all those women, 67 % were later diognosed with HIV or AIDs. there were 50,000 widows as a result of the genocide, 10 times more than widowers. between the ages of 14-21, there were 100,000 survivers. after the genocide, there were 75,000 orphans. half of the childen that survived the genocide stooed their schooling. and even today, there are 40,000 survivers still without shelter.

My Reason

i chose this topic because of different reasons. i watched the movie Hotel Rwanda and when i was done, i fekt i needed to learn more about this particular event in history. i believe that before that movie came out, not alot of people in our society really knew about it. i personally didn't even know about it untill my freshman year in High School. that's really sad, seeing that this was such a huge deal and so many people lost their lives to it. i know that if this sort of thing happened in our day in age, and in our country, alot of the other countries would take notice. maybe because Rwanda is a smaller country in Africa that not alot of people know about it, but we all know about Hitler and what he did. this isn't much different. in fact in my eyes, this could be worse. there technically wasn't one person in charge of this and a whole population were killing their fellow Rwandans. i'm sincerely sorry for the families that were killed and the children that were left orphans.

Total Impact

While millions of people watched the news of this horrible genocide, not one country stood up and made an effort to stop it. not the U.S., not France, not Belgium. Peacemakers tried as they might, but nothing and nobody made a difference in this. the most sad was having our own country fail to even classify this as a genocide. Genocide as defined on dictionary.com is: a deliberate and systematic extermination of a national, racial, political, or cultural group. how could the killing of the Tutsi population not be labeled a genocide? the Hutu's deliberatly planned to target and destroy all of them no matter what. some single individuals tried to make differences and stop this, but it was to no use. the genocide only stopped when the Tutsi rebel group, the RPF and new president Paul Kagame, took control. the U.S. officials didn't even use the word "genocide" during public statements. i feel that we definatly hit a low point when this is brought up.

Rwanda Genocide

it is estimated that over 80o,ooo people were murdered in the horrible genocide. what hurts he most about this is that as a whole, america di nothing. we didn't get involved and we didn't even label it as a genocde. this poor country was torn by two different cultures, the Hutu and the Tutsi. over the years the Hutu became very hostile towards the Tutsi and many rebellions against the Tutsi began planning their attacks. when the presidents plane was shot down, the Hutu broke lose and started murdering people in bulk. entire famlies were murdered in their home. When Tutsi's would try and escape and run for the boarders, they were tracked down and killed. women were raped then killed in front of children. Because the president, Habyararimana, was a Hutu, many hutu's felt the need to erase the whole Tutsi population.
